| Larache, not to be missed visits |
- Where to sleep in Larache? |
- The panorama of the city (leave Larache to the direction of Tangier and turn left to the height of the site of Lixus, approximately 4 km): splendid sight while going to the beach located on the other side of the wadi which is stretched for kilometres. - The Archaeological Museum, installed in a bastion from the XVIth century, struck with the arms of Charles Quint: conceals some beautiful sculptures, a great number of coins and many objects found in the excavations of Lixus - The Citadel of the Stork, fortress raised in 1578 on the order of a saadian sultan by the Portuguese prisoners of the "battle of the three kings", and altered by the Spanish in the XVIIth century. - The municipal market, of a Moorish style, with its towers and cupolas and its enclosure: under the arcades, are installed the merchants of fish and fruit & vegetables. - The tomb of Jean Genet, in the Christian cemetery, very charming, repainted in white and blue, with the sea as background; on its tomb, two white stones which frame a little red sand. The ocean for only companion, the prison right behind, the writer rests as he lived. |
